Audiobook Narration for Authors By Genre

Finding the right voice and tone for a story is critical to how a listener experiences it. Here’s how I approach it, genre by genre.

No File

Genres & Specialties

Every genre asks something different of a narrator. Here's how I approach each one, with real titles from my catalog.

Memoir & True Crime

This is where I started — I wrote and narrated my own memoir, The Hidden Pull, before I ever narrated for anyone else. Memoir asks something different of a narrator than fiction does: restraint, honesty, and enough self-awareness to let a true story breathe instead of performing it.

Spiritual & Religious

The Way of Mastery — narrating spiritual and religious work calls for a steady, trustworthy voice that doesn't compete with the material. The goal is clarity, not performance.

Mystery, Thriller & Suspense

Sugar Cube — mystery and suspense live or die on tension and timing: how much a narrator reveals in tone before the page does. I treat pacing here as part of the plotting itself.

Historical Fiction

Against a Crescent Storm — historical fiction asks for range across time, place, and often multiple characters, while staying grounded enough that the history itself feels real rather than staged.

History & Biography

Thinkers and Dreamers: Genius and the Evolution of European Thought (XVI–XIX Century) by Hristo Toshkov — narrating intellectual history calls for precision and pacing that respects dense material without losing the listener; the goal is clarity over performance.

Fantasy

The Chosen One's Assistant: Never Meet Your Heroes by Kimber Grey — epic/high fantasy with real comedic bite. Fantasy narration means distinct character voices held consistently across a long book, and enough range to sell both the cosmic stakes and the humor.

Parenting

Girl Dad, The Practical Guide for First-Time Dads, and Social Skills for Teens — parenting titles need warmth and directness in equal measure. This is a genre where I have real depth, with three titles narrated in the category.

Personal Development & Self-Help

The Happiness Manual, 365 Daily Affirmations, The Book of Minds by Jeff Davies, and Help for Hoarding — self-help and personal development narration is closer to a conversation than a performance. The goal is credibility: a listener has to trust the voice giving them the advice.

Travel & Adventure

FUERZA: Power — a story of travel and finding your way in a foreign land — and Introverts: Southern Utah Travel for Crowd Haters both live in the same territory: a strong sense of place. Narrating travel material well means specificity — real places rendered vividly enough that a listener feels like they're actually there.

Conspiracy & Speculative Nonfiction

Red Symphony, Aliens, UFOs, Nephilim Giants, Hybrids & Cryptids in the Bible, and The Great Canadian Lore — this material asks a narrator to hold a tone of genuine curiosity without tipping into parody, whether the subject is historical conspiracy or unexplained phenomena.

Coming of Age

Pipeliner was uniquely challenging for a few reasons. It’s a romance-adjacent story with two teens as primary protagonists, as well as many other young supporting characters. Coming-of-age audiobook narration required up-pitching the vocal register to achieve younger, age-appropriate voicing and female characters, and a lot of back-and-forth male to female, with both casual and drama-style dialogue. The concert scene towards the end of the book is a great example, as singing in audiobooks is always a bit of a gamble. It also required blending ambient sound effects (echo/reverb) and alternating third-person narration with full vocal performance.

Can an audiobook narrator perform songs or sound effects? Sure, it’s a creative liberty that’s granted on a case-by-case basis by the author.

Perhaps the most unique part was that I didn’t have a melody — the author gave me some general direction on his music preferences, but I had to invent the song styles and harmonies myself.

🎧 Hear a sample (author permission pending) — a short excerpt from the concert scene, once cleared with the author.

Post-Apocalyptic & Speculative Fiction

Twilight of Empires — big-canvas, post-apocalyptic fiction needs scale and momentum: a narrator's ear for when a scene needs to move versus when it needs to breathe.

Red Symphony by Joseph Landowski

Dr. Landowski was a Russianized Pole and lived in Russia. His father, a Colonel of the Russian Imperial Army, was shot by the Bolsheviks during the 1917 revolution. The life-story of Dr. Landowski is astonishing. He finished the Faculty of Medicine in Russia before the revolution and then studied two years at the Sorbonne in Paris, and he spoke fluent French. He was interested in the effects of drugs on the human organism, to help surgeons in operations. Being a talented doctor, he carried out experiments in this field and had achieved considerable results. The all-seeing NKVD (secret police) became interested in these works and easily discovered the real author. His specialty was very valuable for them. One day in 1936 there was a knock at the doctor's door. He was invited to follow, and he was never again allowed to rejoin his family. He was placed in the building of the chemical laboratory of the NKVD near Moscow. He lived there and was forced to carry out various jobs given to him by his masters, he was a witness at questionings, tortures and the most terrible happenings and crimes. This book is an exact recorded report of the questioning of the former Ambassador in France, C.G. Rakovsky during the period of the trials of the Trotskyists in the USSR in 1938, when he was tried together with Bukharin, Rykoff, Yagoda, Karakhan, Dr. Levin and others. The questioning took place in French by this agent. The doctor was present in order to put drug pills unnoticed into the glass of Rakovsky, to induce energy and a good mood. Behind the wall the conversation was registered on apparatus, and the technician who operated it did not understand French. Then Dr. Landowski had to translate into Russian, with two copies, for Stalin and Gabriel. Secretly he dared to make a carbon copy, which he hid anyway.

Sugar Cube by Joe Morello

Pipeliner by Shawn Hartje

In the playful style of Tom Robbins, Ed Abbey, and Kurt Vonnegut, Shawn Hartje’s Pipeliner is a laugh-out-loud journey through ‘90s culture.

Idaho, 1993: Seventeen-year-old Jason Krabb falls for a girl from the other side of town who’s mixed up with a ragtag crew of pipeliners bringing gas lines through the high desert.

Jason’s hilariously naive struggle to distinguish himself as one of the crew while attempting to leave his mark on the ‘90s grunge scene is a stirring reflection on adolescence.

With cameo perspectives from Jason's prominent parents, Pipeliner is more than a coming-of-age tale about an across-the-tracks romance; it’s a heartfelt portrayal of parenting and a keenly observed glimpse of early '90s America.

Aliens, UFOs, Nephilim Giants, Hybrids & Cryptids in the Bible by Charlotte Haire

Are we living in the last days? End-time events prophesied thousands of years ago are manifesting on the Earth today with increased frequency and intensity. UFOs, aliens, Nephilim giants, cryptids and the unexplainable are appearing as portals open, dimensions collide and the supernatural is unveiled to the natural world. Simply watch the nightly news or scroll through social media to witness a plethora of strange happenings that have been captured on camera or video. Who would have ever imagined reported sightings of giant aliens at a mall in Miami? Or UFOs cloaked in clouds?

Evidence of a coming showdown between good and evil is mounting enough to squelch the sarcasm of end time mockers and scoffers. Even the staunchest non-believers sense that something evil is coming and agree that perhaps we are close to the Apocalypse. A palpable rise in darkness is causing fear and confusion, leaving many to wonder where to go for answers. There is a reliable resource available to help navigate our course during the last days. Ancient prophecies in The Bible warn of events to come.

In Luke 21: 26 – 28, the disciple offers a glimpse of something ominous coming in the last days that will cause such fear that men will drop dead of heart failure.

What could cause such fear? Jesus gives us many clues. One most notable is found in Matthew 24:37: “As in the days of Noah so shall it be when the Son of Man returns…” What is so distinctive about the days of Noah? Events occurring during that time were so horrendous that God Almighty had to intervene. Did Noah’s time resemble today’s headlines that speak of aliens, UFOs, weather catastrophes and strange sightings across the globe?

This first book in the End Time Watchman Commentaries series will tackle those questions along with a variety of “fringe” or “taboo” topics that few Pastors will address.

  • What are aliens & are they mentioned in The Bible?

  • Are UFOs in The Bible?

  • What are Nephilim?

  • What really happened in the Garden of Eden?

  • What is the origin of giants like Goliath?

  • What are the lionlike men in the Old Testament?

  • Why would a loving God order Israel to kill entire tribes of people?

The goal is to intrigue and provoke the listener to ask the hard questions and explore the evidence to find answers not discussed in churches today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Real answers to the questions authors ask most before making an audiobook.

Should I even make an audiobook?

Yes — audio is how a huge share of readers now experience books at all. U.S. audiobook sales hit $2.43 billion in 2025 (up 9% from 2024), and 157 million Americans — 58% of the adult population — have listened to an audiobook. That's not a niche format anymore; it's a primary one for a lot of readers.

Should I narrate it myself, or hire someone?

It depends on the book and on you. Self-narration works well for memoir and personal nonfiction, where the author's own voice is part of the material's authenticity — I did exactly this with my own memoir. For fiction, especially anything requiring distinct character voices or sustained vocal performance across 8–10+ hours, a trained narrator is usually the stronger choice. I've been on both sides of this decision, which is part of why authors come to me specifically.

How much does it cost?

The going indie rate is roughly $200–$400 per finished hour, which puts a typical 10-hour audiobook around $2,000–$4,000 total. Rates vary with narrator experience, production complexity (single vs. multiple character voices), and turnaround time.

How long until it pays for itself?

This varies a lot by genre and marketing, but a commonly cited indie benchmark is around 3–4 years to fully recoup production costs through royalties — faster if you already have an engaged reader base to launch it to.

Where do I even start?

Start with the book itself: decide whether it suits self-narration or a hired narrator (see above), get a sample chapter narrated before committing to the full project, and check ACX or a narrator's own site for rates and availability. Most of the "overwhelm" authors report comes from skipping the sample-chapter step and committing blind.

How do I find a narrator on a limited budget?

Sample rates directly from a few narrators rather than only using ACX's marketplace defaults, ask about flexible payment structures (some narrators offer royalty-share instead of full up-front payment), and be realistic that a shorter book costs proportionally less — a novella-length work is a much smaller commitment than a full novel.

How do I choose an audiobook narrator for my genre?

Listen to samples in your actual genre, not just a narrator's general demo reel — pacing and character work that's excellent for thriller can be wrong for memoir or parenting content. Ask whether they've narrated your genre before, and request a short paid sample of your own manuscript before committing to the full book.

ACX vs. hiring a narrator directly — what's the difference?

ACX is a marketplace that connects authors and narrators (often via royalty-share deals with no upfront cost), while hiring directly means working one-on-one with a narrator on rate, timeline, and creative direction outside that marketplace structure. Direct hire generally means more control and faster communication; ACX can mean lower upfront cost but less flexibility.

What makes a good audiobook narrator for memoir or inspirational books?

Restraint and credibility more than performance range — a memoir narrator's job is to disappear into the honesty of the material rather than perform it. I'd argue lived experience helps too: having written and narrated my own memoir shaped how I approach every memoir project since.
